Word Counter

Paste or type your text to count words, characters (with and without spaces), sentences and paragraphs, and see how long it takes to read.

What the counts mean

Words are groups of characters separated by spaces, so extra spaces and line breaks don't add to the count. Characters are shown with and without spaces. Sentences end with a full stop, question mark or exclamation mark. Paragraphs are separated by a blank line.

Reading time assumes an average adult reads about 200 words a minute. Many school, college and job applications set word or character limits, and social posts and captions often have one too. This tool helps you stay within them.

Frequently asked questions

Does my text leave my device?

No. Counting happens in your browser. Nothing you type is uploaded or stored by CalcHub.

Are spaces counted as words?

No. A word is any run of characters between spaces, so extra spaces and line breaks are not counted as words.
