Enter your weight and height to get your body mass index (BMI), the WHO category it falls into, and the healthy weight range for your height.
What BMI means
Body mass index (BMI) is your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared. It is a quick screening tool for adults. The WHO uses these categories: under 18.5 is underweight, 18.5 to 24.9 is healthy, 25 to 29.9 is overweight, and 30 or more is obese.
Limits of BMI
BMI doesn't distinguish between muscle and fat, and it doesn't show where fat is stored. Muscular people can have a high BMI with a low body fat percentage. BMI is also not designed for children, teenagers or pregnant women. Many South Asian people face higher health risks at a lower BMI, so a doctor may use lower cut-offs. Use BMI as a starting point, and speak to a doctor for a full assessment.
Frequently asked questions
Is BMI accurate for everyone?
It is a rough guide for most adults. It can mislead for muscular people and older adults. Pairing it with waist size gives a better picture of health risk.
What is a healthy weight for my height?
The calculator shows the weight range that gives a BMI from 18.5 to 24.9 for your height. Your ideal weight depends on more than BMI, so discuss it with a doctor if you're unsure.
